Internal Alarm

I read this story in Beth Moore’s 40 day journal
Get Out of That Pit:

One day a friend of Beth’s heard a beeping sound going off somewhere in her house.  She thought maybe it was her husband’s phone and she began looking for the phone.  Everywhere she looked the sound was the same.  The sound never appeared closer or farther away.  Suddenly, she realized that the sound was coming from inside of her.  Her pacemaker battery was dying causing an alarm to sound.  She didn’t even know that there was an alarm for her pacemaker. (paraphrased)

While most of us don’t have a pacemaker inside of us, we do have an internal alarm that lets us know when something is wrong.  Our alarm is the Holy Spirit.

How many times have you been in a situation when you felt a twisting in your gut?  When you knew that you knew there was something “off” about the situation.  Sometimes, you heeded that gut feeling and other times you ignored it.  I am sure many of you can recall such a time.  And I’m sure that in hindsight you wish that you had heeded what your gut was trying to tell you.

Over the years, I’ve felt that twisting in my gut repeatedly.  While sometimes it was simply my anxiousness over the situation…more times than not, I believe it was the Holy Spirit setting off my internal alarm.  The “Christianese” for that internal alarm is “a check in my spirit.”

Too often, I chose to ignore that check in my spirit.  Looking back I can say that during the hardest decisions in my life my internal alarm tried to guide me down the right path.  Unfortunately, I chose to ignore the warnings a majority of the time which resulted in my ending up in one bad situation after another.

God has blessed us with our own personal internal alarm, the Holy Spirit, all we need to do is pay closer attention when that alarm starts beeping.  When we get that “gut feeling” maybe we should pause for a moment to discern if God is trying to warn us about the situation.  That pause gives us the opportunity to take a step back from the situation allowing us to gain some clarity.  If you are still undecided what to do about the situation ask the Lord for wisdom. He has promised that He will give it to us. (James 1:5)

The good news is that the next time we hear the beeping of our internal alarm we won’t need to search our house to figure out what it is.  We will know that it is a check in our spirit that needs to be addressed!

If you’re in a situation right now where you hear your internal alarm beeping take a moment…and pause.

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you.
James 1:5 NLT
