I have to admit that I was a “surfer groupie” back in the day. Every weekend my girlfriends and I would pack my Mercury Station Wagon full of surfer dudes – a.k.a our good friends from high school with an insatiable urge to catch a wave – to head over to the Jetty.
Upon arrival at the beach the guys would scramble out the car, grab their boards from the top of the station wagon, and plunge into the beckoning ocean. All of us girls would take our time setting up our portable sun tanning station with all the accoutrements. Once we were settled into our beach chairs we’d watch our surfers hang out in the water as they patiently waited for the perfect wave with their name on it.
Our friend Jason was waiting for that perfect wave when he was yanked off his board. The other surfers sped towards him paddling as fast as they could. Those of us on shore weren’t sure what had just happened, but we knew that Jason was in trouble. The other surfers got him to shore where he was able to walk with their support. Somebody threw them a towel which they quickly wrapped around his hand. He had been bitten by a shark. He was rushed to the hospital where they sewed his hand back together.
The next weekend Jason was back out at the Jetty waiting with the other surfers for his perfect wave. While we all thought he was crazy, Jason simply believed that stuff happens in life. You can choose to let it make you give up or you can choose to get back out there on the water knowing that there is a perfect wave out there with your name on it! Jason wasn’t going to let a shark bite keep him from waiting on his wave.
Life is a lot like that – we are all waiting on our perfect wave. Maybe it’s a new job, maybe it’s a husband, maybe it’s a baby, or maybe we’re waiting to be happy. Sometimes while we are waiting our circumstances can take a huge bite out of us. That bite causes us a lot of pain making us wonder if it’s really worth it! We wonder if we are waiting for a wave that doesn’t even exist.
We often ask the question, “How many times is life going to take bite out of me before I get a break?”
I don’t have an answer for that question. What I can tell you is that I got bitten quite a few times in my life. Sometimes I chose to give up, sometimes I chose to grab the first wave that came my way, and other times I chose to wait on my perfect wave. For years I was the impatient surfer who tried to rush things, but that always landed me far from shore. The times I waited on the wave paid off because each time I did that the Lord brought me my perfect wave…the wave with my name on it!
I don’t know how many times you’ve been bitten while waiting for your perfect wave, but I do know that there is a perfect wave out there for you. So, please don’t give up if you’ve just been bitten, if you’re tired of waiting, or if you don’t even believe that there is a perfect wave coming. I promise you that somewhere out there in the ocean we call life is a perfect wave that is for you and you alone. And God made sure to put your name on that wave!
For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster,
to give you a future and a hope.
