2 Corinthians 2:14…and through us spreads and makes evident the fragrance of the knowledge of God everywhere, 15For we are the sweet fragrance of Christ [which exhales] unto God, [discernible alike] among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.
Did you know that the market for candles and home fragrances is almost 10 billion dollars annually? That dollar figure is driven by consumers’ desire for their homes and cars to smell good. More than 80 percent of all adult Americans bought some kind of fragrance product in the past year, including candles, sprays, plugs-ins, room fresheners, potpourris, air fresheners, and more.
We spend millions on trying to make everything around us smell good to others, but what are willing to spend on smelling good to God. How much do we invest in being the fragrance of Christ? The only way to be the fragrance of Christ is to spend time in relationship with Him.
The other weekend I was baking cookies to send to a friend of mine who is in the Air Force. I had to walk back to the other end of the house from the kitchen to get my cell phone. As I headed back towards the kitchen the fragrance of chocolate peanut butter cup cookies filled my nostrils to overflowing. The baking cookie smell permeated the entire house.
It was a scent that brought back memories of my mother baking cookies for me as a child. The way she smelled of butter and flour when she wrapped her arms around me to hug me. She smelled exactly like the baking cookies. Sometimes I’d help her spoon the cookie dough onto the cookie sheet. More often than not, I would get cookie dough smeared on my clothing from being in close proximity to the dough. When I went back to my room to change my splattered shirt I smelled like the fragrance of the cookies.
Closing my eyes I remember the smell. It brings a smile to my face as the memories of my time spent baking with my mom waft through your mind. A simple smell flooding me with the joy of time spent with a loved one enjoying our time together.
Well, that’s what we need to do to smell like Christ. We need to spend time wrapped in His arms. We do this by praying, having quiet times with the Lord, reading the Word, doing Bible Studies, fellowshipping, attending the Healing Service, and going to Church. The more time we spend with Jesus the more we pick up His fragrance. And hopefully when we spend time with other people they will smell the fragrance of Christ on us.
I sometimes ask myself, “Do people smell the fragrance of Christ when I enter or leave a room?
I pray that people smell Christ whenever I’m around. That the time I spend with Him will spread His fragrance to the people He puts in my path. Think about it: if I smell like Christ from spending time with Him then I go around someone who picks up the fragrance, then they go around another person who picks up the fragrance, and etc. Pretty soon the fragrance of Christ is going to be wafting around the world!
Now that smells pretty good to me, how about you?
