Choosing Blue

“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John 8:32 (NLT)

If anyone has not seen the movie, The Matrix, stop reading now. This will make no sense unless you’ve seen the movie. Also, you should go out and rent it. It is a fun, uber-cool movie.

For the rest of you, let’s put on our uber-cool outfits and think back to the scene where Morpheus confronts our hero Neo (they even have uber-cool names!). He offers Neo a choice between taking the blue or the red pill. Choosing the red pill will show him the truth behind his fabricated reality. Choosing the blue one will allow Neo to remain in his ‘illusion of ignorance’. And, being the intrepid hero that he is, Neo chooses the red pill and with it, the truth.

When I saw this movie, I imagined that I too would be bold and choose the red pill. Well, actually I probably would have told Morpheus, “Thanks but I don’t take pills from strange men who wear sunglasses indoors”, but if I did make a choice, I would like to think I would have chosen the red pill of truth.   I would like to believe that everyone would have chosen the red. But, the hard truth is, most people chose the blue pill, and they do it over and over again.

Choosing the blue boils down to choosing a lie over the truth. It’s about pretending things are fine when they are not, such as:

  • Living an expensive lifestyle because you are too proud to admit to your friends that you can’t afford it.
  • Continuing to pretend that your [insert your secret here] is not controlling your life.
  • Pasting on a happy smile when you are dying inside.

A few days ago I spoke to a women who had told her boyfriend that she was richer and years younger than she actually was. She wanted to ‘come clean’, but she was afraid that she’d lose a man she loved. In the end, she chose to continue lying. For her, the truth was just too scary to contemplate.

red-pill-blue-pillThe Matrix makes the choice between red and blue seem easy, but it’s not. Choosing truth can shatter your entire world, but only if it’s a false world that is based on lies. When Neo chose the red pill, it led him to a world of truth, power and freedom.

When Jesus told His disciples, “The truth will set you free”, He is talking about Himself. God is the ultimate ‘red pill’. Today, toss out your blue pills and choose truth. Choose freedom. Choose Christ.

  1. You know, the only problem I have with this anolgay is we all know how badly this ended for Neo.Would you take the Red pill if you knew you were going to die horribly if you did?I am know I have enough Faust in me that I would.

  2. That’s a good question, Mariah. This film ended well for Neo–he is preparing to free his world, including the machines. I didn’t see the other two, so I wasn’t aware he met a bad end. I can’t comment on the others, but if you’re asking me figuratively if I would choose to die horribly, I would tell you that this is the choice my Lord made, to die horribly so that my sins are forgiven. I might die painfully (hope not), but because Christ died for me I will not die ‘horribly’. This is the best answer I can think to give.
