We can’t protect ourselves from the troubles of life, but we can dance through the puddles of life with a rainbow smile, twirling the only umbrella we need – the umbrella of God’s love.
~ Barbara Johnson
The past few weeks it has seemed like many people have been bombarded with troubles. In fact, there has been a veritable downpour.
It all started when a friend of mine lost her job. Then one of my roommates got stung by a hornet, had a reaction, and got an infection from the sting. The next day my best friend had to put one of her dogs to sleep. Then my same roommate got stung again (5 times) and had reactions to the stings. A friend of mine’s spouse was in a serious car accident. Another friend was admitted to the hospital. And one of my family members was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).
To be honest, if we only focus on those troubles, it could be hard to feel like dancing. All of those troubles have the propensity to distract us from the one constant in our lives – God’s love.
When we are focused on troubles it can be difficult to remember that God loves us more than life…literally. Troubles can be joy stealers. Instead of dancing through the “puddles of life” we can feel more like stomping our feet and demanding to know why these things are happening. While there is nothing wrong with asking God “why,” we need to make sure we don’t get stuck there and miss out on the way God is showing He loves us during those times of trouble.
The friend of mine who lost her job has a couple of wonderful opportunities opening up for a job and an internship. The friend whose spouse was in a car accident reported that God’s protection saved the spouse’s life and there is no internal damage. The friend who was admitted to the hospital was able to go home a day later. My family member who was diagnosed with ALS has qualified for the medical expenses to be covered by the VA and the coverage is retroactive back to 2013.
That’s God’s love at work in the midst of the storms of trouble!
Instead of letting troubles cast a stormy pall over our lives, let’s raise up the umbrella of God’s love to look for the rainbows in the midst of the storms. We might not always be able to dance through the puddles of life, but we can tap our feet or sway to the beat of God’s love. When we do that we will find our strength in the joy of the Lord’s love.
Don’t be sad because the joy you have in the Lord is your strength.
