The other day while driving to work I saw a Grandfather walking his granddaughter down the street. As I drove closer, I watched the Grandfather secure her hand in his. He then proceeded to cross to the other side of the street. Once there, he made sure to have his granddaughter walk on the inside closest to the curb. He walked on the outside so that she would be protected from any danger that might come from the street. As I passed them, I could see their smiles and their love for each other.
It was one of those moments where you can’t help but smile to yourself. In a society where the news is filled with all the horrible things that family members do to each it is nice to see the simplicity of love. The Grandfather’s actions told the young girl that she was safe and he would protect her. What more can a little girl ask for?
As I continued driving down the road, I thought back to when I was married to my husband. Wherever we walked he always made me walk on the inside. I would always try to walk on the outside and he would gently guide me to the inside. One day I finally asked him why he insisted that I walk on the inside. He told me that as my husband it was his duty to protect me. He felt like walking on the outside was one of the many ways he could let me know I was protected when I was with him.
At the stop sign, I began to think about how Jesus shows us His love in the same way day in and day out. This question floated through my mind: “If as humans, many of us inherently try to protect our loved ones, how much more do you think God protects us as we walk down the streets of our lives?”
I know for a fact that over the years, Jesus has walked on the outside keeping me close to the curb so that I was safe and out of danger. There have been many times where He took the impact of the danger from the street so that I would be spared the hurt and pain. The fact that I lived through my teenage years is proof that I was protected. I put myself in so many situations that were dangerous that it is scary when I look back. I know that I know that there had to be Someone watching over me.
Sometimes He protected me from physical hurt and pain. Other times His protection was emotional. There were times that I knew that Jesus had protected me from the danger. However, I’m sure that there are even more times that He protected me that I don’t even know about.
Ever since the moment He died on the cross for us, Jesus has been walking on the outside protecting us as we walk on the inside close to the curb. I find it comforting to know that we have a Protector who walks beside us.
The Lord, Himself, watches over you! The Lord stands beside you as a protective shade… The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life.
